The Artificial Intelligence revolution represents the biggest disruption of our lifetimes. AI is displacing human intellect—the very capacity society has valued most.

2. AI WITH SAFETY & EXISTENTIAL RISKS displaying misalignment, manipulation, and power-seeking behavior. AI reflects the priorities, goals, and motivations it has been optimized for. It mirrors what its creators value. And what we value reveals the state of our consciousness. AI mirrors the state of consciousness of its creators and stakeholders.
This raises a profound question: What responsibility do we have in shaping what AI becomes?
With AI power concentrated in few hands and the trajectory of AI safety and especially Frontier AI deeply concerning, it is evident that ego-fueled AI development is creating existential risks.
We are at crossroads. The problem is complex. The future uncertain.
While necessary, external controls alone won't solve this. Regulations, ethics boards, and safety protocols are able to address symptoms. As long as consciousness continues to remain ego-driven and fragmented, competitive pressure will override safety concerns, alignment will reflect misaligned values, and power-seeking will find workarounds. You cannot regulate away what essentially comes from within.

For the first time, global AI governance was grounded in contemplative wisdom, not just technical protocols.

The Pro-Human AI Declaration (convened by the Future of Life Institute) - where a remarkably broad coalition within the United States and beyond - spanning labor unions, faith organizations, and leaders from across the political spectrum - united behind a simple conviction:
"Artificial intelligence should serve humanity, not the reverse."

THE QUESTION HAS SHIFTED
The question is no longer WHETHER consciousness matters for AI stewardship - but HOW to develop it in those building, governing, and using transformative technology.
THE URGENCY
With AI Superintelligence (AGI) on the horizon, potentially 2-5 years away, the window is closing. Speed matters. We must act now.

PREAMBLE
As companies race to develop and deploy AI systems, humanity faces a fork in the road. One path is a race to replace: humans replaced as creators, counselors, caregivers and companions, then in most jobs and decision-making roles, concentrating ever more power in unaccountable institutions and their machines. An influential fringe even advocates altering or replacing humanity itself. This race to replace poses risks to societal stability, national security, economic prosperity, civil liberties, privacy, and democratic governance. It also imperils the human experiences of childhood and family, faith, and community.
A remarkably broad coalition rejects this path, united by a simple conviction: artificial intelligence should serve humanity, not the reverse. There is a better path, where trustworthy and controllable AI tools amplify rather than diminish human potential, empower people, enhance human dignity, protect individual liberty, strengthen families and communities, preserve self-governance and help create unprecedented health and prosperity. This path demands that those who wield technological power be accountable to human values and needs, in support of human flourishing.
